ISO 50001 Energy Management System

What is ISO 50001?

ISO 50001 is based on the management system model of continual improvement also used for other well-known standards such as ISO 9001 or ISO 14001. This makes it easier for organizations to integrate energy management into their overall efforts to improve quality and environmental management.

“The purpose of the International Standard ISO 50001 is to enable organizations to establish the systems and processes necessary to improve energy performance, including energy efficiency, use, and consumption.”

An efficient energy management systems (EEMS) will help your organization to establish processes to improve energy performance. A well implemented system should reduce your energy costs, Carbon Footprint, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and other environmental impacts. ISO 50001 establishes an international framework for the supply, consumption and use of energy in institutional, commercial and industrial organizations.

ISO 50001, therefore, has made a major leap forward in ‘raising the bar’ by requiring an organization to demonstrate that they have improved their energy performance. There are no quantitative targets specified – an organization chooses its own then creates an action plan to reach the targets. With this structured approach, an organization is more likely to see some tangible financial benefits.

How will ISO 50001 help your company?

Most companies opt to achieve certification for key business reasons including:

  • Manage and Identify the risks surrounding energy supply in the future
  • Monitor and measure energy use, to identify areas of improved efficiency
  • Increase the overall performance and to cut energy bills and consumption
  • Meet government reduction targets and reduce carbon emissions
  • Demonstrate environmental credibility and to increase tender opportunities
  • competitive advantage over rivals
  • requirement within ‘invitations to tender’ and ‘supply chains’
  • Meeting legal requirements
  • Increase energy efficiency and support energy conservation
  • Demonstrate a commitment to sustainability
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • Improve use of existing energy assets
  • Refine energy procurement practices
  • Assist in the evaluation, prioritising and implementation of new energy-efficient technologies
  • Allow for more streamlined integration with other management systems such as quality, environmental, and occupational health and safety
